Reader Reaction: The God’s Eye View by Barry Eisler
I’ve read all his stuff so this should be an easy 5 stars for me but…
I don’t know if it’s because I’ve read all of his other books and wanted to fall into an easy familiarity with Rain or Rain-like character, that I’m floundering around in this one about who to latch on to as the main character. It’s got everything I like: Snowden, Greenwald and Poitras, Wikileaks (I subscribe to The Intercept), he names a few others I’m going to have to look up, fast pace, current events espionage thriller… Why am I 25% in and don’t know who the main character is and who to root for? I got a couple of guesses and I’m being walked through intelligence stuff which is interesting enough, but… I can’t wait to find out at least.
Eisler isn’t the first male author to do this and unfortunately he won’t be the last but I’m tired, tired, TIRED of it and I’m docking a story for it every time I read it. Breast size is included in female characterizations. WHY? Why, why why? Is it because as a size D we won’t see her chasing after anyone or throwing some karate moves? Does that make her extra super irresistible?
I demand that if male authors are going to include that detail every single time they describe a female character than I now need to know a male character’s junk size… just saying… *eye roll*
In his last two books he’s been including differently-abled characters and that’s really cool. I don’t read his books for the sex scenes. I have no idea why he/they started adding that as a marketing thing. No, just no. At least it is a part of the story and not gratuitous which makes it a good thing.
