I woke up screaming.
“Mina!” Kazi was by my side in an instant.
“It’s okay. It’s not me. It’s Gumus.”
“Gumus? The Kertenkele?”
“Yes, something has gone wrong. Very wrong.”
Kazi climbed into bed with me and stayed until morning.
A few days later I knew Gumus was traveling to Mikanokichikata to find me. I asked the Faglars to prepare for a trip. Although the city was comfortable for me to travel in the rest of Varlid was not. I didn’t want to tell Kazi or Luru I planned to travel outside but the Faglars could only do so much on their own.
“No,” Luru said her arms crossed. I think she even stamped her foot.
“I’m going Luru. I have to. You can either help me and make sure I get their and back safely or not.”
“Huh! You’re in no position to make me do this.”
“That’s not fair. I’m asking you for your help. I have the right to ask. You have the right to say no. What you can’t do is stop me. And if you’re going to use my physical condition to force me then… I can no longer call you a friend.”
“I didn’t mean to make it sound like that. You can’t go Mina. I can’t guarantee your safety. Not outside of the city. I’m sorry I wish I could.”
“It’s okay. When has Varlid ever been safe? But I know I can do this or at least I can try to do this.”
“If Gumus is headed this way you don’t need to meet him.”
“He’s trying to make it here but there’s something not right and I can’t tell for certain he will make it. He might give up. I can’t let him give up.”
“I’ll go,” Kazi said. “The Faglars will go. They’ve already said yes. We just need to be prepared. Take supplies. Where do you think you’ll find Gumus?”
“He’s coming from Dohla. There’s the three Galen between here and there so we should reach him at the end of Aririnkatata. I can stop at Port Nomoshichi and the whole area is under Faglar control now. I’m not going out of our territory.”
“You’ll be so close to Enade. The Asistan Ti could— “ Luru didn’t finish her thought.
“Get revenge? I wasn’t the one who planned it. That was Teke and Teke’s dead. Killing me wouldn’t make any sense. They could have done it long before now if they wanted to.”
“Who said those little cursed creatures made any sense?”
“Luru, she’s going to go,” Kazi said. “If you’re that worried, come with us.”
“I would but then who’s going to stay behind and make sure no one finds out you’re gone!”
I smiled and lifted my arms as high as I could for a hug. “Thank you, sister.”
I woke up screaming.
